Our aims:
Our aim at Skelton Primary School is to inspire children to be creative, imaginative writers, who enjoy sharing their ideas on a page.ย Giving children the opportunity to be innovative writers will provide them with important skills such as being able to expand on their vocabulary and be able to write at length.
Writing in EYFS:
Children are encouraged to mark make from an early age. Within Early Years, children have access to areas of provision in which they are able to mark make with resources provided. It allows their imagination to flow and lets them tell a story through making marks on a page.
By the end of the EYFS stage, children are expected to use their knowledge of phonics to be able to write simple sentences, in which they can read.
Writing at Skelton Primary in KS1/KS2:
We promote a love for writing at Skelton Primary and inspire children to be passionate writers who enjoy sharing their work with others. A focus for us is ensuring that children are provided with experiences that they are able to write about. This may involve taking the children out on trips, having visitors in, or simply learning about important events around the world. When given these experiences, children produce the most amazing writing based on what they have learnt about.
Throughout KS1 and KS2, children are provided with a range of different and exciting genres. As a school, we teach the genres at the same time, creating a consistent approach. This also allows the children to share their ideas across schools and become fluent in speaking about the different genres they are writing about.
Children take such pride in their work and this is evident within their writing books. Writing is displayed within classrooms to celebrate children’s fantastic writing.
Online Resources:
As a school, we use chrome books to help inspire children and keep learning fun.ย Within KS2, we have a subscription to Spelling Shed, in which children can play games and take quizzes. Teachers are able to monitor their progress and the children enjoy having an engaging resource to learn their spellings!
Marking and Feedback:
We encourage children to recognise the need to adapt and edit their writing. Once the children have finished, teachers mark using green and pink highlighters to pick up on high quality areas and areas that need editing. This encourages children to be independent and shows them that no first piece of writing is perfect.
