Assessment is an integral part of teaching and learning and is a process teachers carry out in every lesson they teach to inform the next steps for the children’s learning and development. Schools are required to assess the children formally at the end of the Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS), the end of Key Stage 1 (KS1) and the end of Key Stage 2 (KS2). Other statutory assessments take place in Year 1 with the Phonics Screening Check which assesses the children’s ability to decode real and non-real words and in Year 4 with the Multiplication check.
At the end of each key stage, teachers are required to undertake both formal and informal assessments of the progress made by pupils. The informal testing is known as teacher assessment and is an important part of the process because it uses judgements made from on-going assessments, taken over the whole academic year. Teachers make informal assessments every time they teach a class, and they will use these judgements to plan what the children need to learn next. The formal tests are knows as Standard Assessment Tests (SATs) which are produced nationally and are taken by all children in the country at the end of KS1 and KS2.

The Department for Education (DfE) produce Performance Tables which give information on the achievements of pupils in primary, secondary and 16-18 provision in schools and colleges, and how they compare with other schools in the Local Authority (LA) area and in England as a whole.

School Performance: update for 2020
As part of steps taken to fight the spread of coronavirus (COVID-19), the Government announced that all exams that were due to take place in schools and colleges in England in summer 2020 would be cancelled and that it will not publish any school or college level educational performance data based on tests, assessments or exams for 2020. Additionally, the DfE will not publish any national, regional, local or constituency statistics for any primary school assessments for the 2019 to 2020 academic year.
